2 May; Commemorative demonstrations to be held in Odessa

Posted: 01/05/2015

Activist and civic groups are scheduled to hold commemorative demonstrations in Odessa, Ukraine, on 2 May, which is tomorrow.

The demonstrations have been called to mark the first anniversary of the 2 May 2014 protests, in which at least 48 people were killed. Participants are expected to gather at Cathedral Square and Kulikovo Field; further details regarding the start time of the gatherings are currently unavailable.

An increased police presence is expected to accompany the upcoming events. The demonstrations are expected to be well attended and should hopefully take place without incident. Although the upcoming gatherings will occur amid an increased police presence, the risk of violent civil unrest remains.

Anticipated security measures, including possible road closures, may result in localised travel disruptions in and around the protest-affected venues.

Any travellers in Odessa tomorrow are advised to avoid the upcoming demonstrations and all related gatherings as a precaution. You also expect localised traffic disruptions.
