Cameroon - avoid travel on the 30 September 2013
RPS advises against travelling to Cameroon on 30 September 2013, as the country is set to hold countrywide legislative and municipal elections on that day.
The long-awaited elections were expected to take place in July 2012; however, they have been postponed several times, with authorities citing logistical concerns regarding the biometric upgrade of the voters roll as the key reason for the delays. The elections come amid growing discontent with the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) as the electorate has become increasingly frustrated over government policies and lack of democratic progress in the country.
Unemployment and inflation are at very high levels, putting increasing economic pressure on the populace.
Protests by opposition groups during the election process remain possible; these are likely to be concentrated in the capital, Yaounde.
Despite the growing opposition, the CPDM is expected to retain its majority both at the National Assembly level and within municipal councils. Accordingly, a significant shift in the current political environment is deemed unlikely.
Nevertheless, the likely continuation of high unemployment and inflation in the near-term may serve as a catalyst for increasing anti-government sentiment in the future.
Caution is advised in the vicinity of all election-related facilities on and immediately after the election date.
RPS advises any clients who are already in Cameroon to tighten security measures around the 30 September and avoid any possible protests and demonstrations.
