Croatia 16 and 17 August - protests countrywide likely to cause road blockages

Posted: 15/08/2013

RPS can report that unionised farmers in Croatia are set to intensify anti-government protests across the country on 16 and 17 August.

Associated road blockades are expected along the A3 highway on tomorrow; Friday 16.  In addition, farmers are expected to hold a protest march in the Zagreb county on 17 August. The march is scheduled to commence at 10:00 am local time. The exact march route is unknown; however, it will likely impact on the city of Dakovo.

Authorities have warned of ensuing traffic disruptions. The planned road blockades and protest march are the latest in an ongoing protest campaign by unionised farmers in the country in recent days. Although previous demonstrations have been localised, a collapse in negotiations between Croatian farmers and the government in an ongoing dispute regarding state subsidies, has prompted an intensification in the protest campaign.

Larger-scale protests and associated traffic disruptions are anticipated in the coming days. The demonstrations are expected to conclude peacefully; however, the possibility of isolated skirmishes between participants and police cannot be discounted.

Travel delays on the A3 highway and connecting roads remain possible, particularly given the increased congestion on alternative routes. Anyone working in Croatia or on holiday there is advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution against civil unrest.

RPS advises everyone in Croatia to monitor local media sources for updates on details about potential road blockades on 16 and 17 August.
