Friday 21 June - planned protests in Cairo

Posted: 20/06/2013

Islamist political party supporters have called for a political rally in support of President Mohammed Mursi in Cairo tomorrow.

The gathering, led by Egyptian ruling party, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)'s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), is set to be held at the Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque in the Nasr City area. This is ahead of the planned protests next Friday.

The possibility of violence tomorrow cannot be discounted, particularly if opposition groups gather near the Islamist event.

Anyone planning to travel to Egypt in the near-term should note that the forthcoming 30 June protests may affect security in cities and towns across the country. Public squares, mosques, universities, city centres, political offices and governorate headquarters are likely gathering points.

Resorts in the south Sinai and along the Red Sea coastline and tourists areas are unlikely to be directly affected. RPS advises all travellers to monitor political developments closely. All street protests and concentrations of security forces should be avoided.
