Increased threat of anti-US protest action in the Middle East

Posted: 10/09/2013

There is an increased likelihood of anti-US demonstrations across the Middle East, North Africa and parts of South Asia in the coming days in response to a potential US-led military strike on Syria and a possible 'Koran burning' by a controversial Christian preacher in the US on 11 September.

Anti-US protests have already been reported in various locations across the region in recent days in response to the potential US strike; these are expected to increase in frequency and possibly size, as we wait for the anticipated upcoming US Congress vote on whether or not to authorise US military action against Syria.

The potential for demonstrations may also increases on 11 September, the 12th anniversary of the 2001 al-Qaeda attacks in the US, and may be aggravated by the anticipated 'Koran burning' in the US on 11 September.

Pastor Terry Jones has announced plans to burn 2,998 copies of the Islamic holy book in Florida on the anniversary day. Should protests occur in the coming days in response to a potential US strike on Syria or Jones's 'Koran burning', likely gathering points are US diplomatic facilities, business interests, cultural centres and other US-government linked sites.

Possible protests will also carry a strong anti-Western sentiment and violence directed toward Westerners or US interests remains a possibility.

RPS advises anyone working or holidaying in the region to monitor local developments closely. All street protests should be avoided as a precaution. Anyone requiring consular assistance is advised to contact their embassy or consulate prior to departure to confirm the status of the embassies and if protests are planned near these facilities.
