Protests today in Tunisia

Posted: 25/07/2013

Tunisia may well see protests today throughout the country but especially in Tunis, to coincide with Republic Day.

State-sponsored rallies and events are likely to coincide with the Republic Day observance. These are expected in the capital, Tunis, and other major and secondary cities in the country.

The political opposition may also use the occasion to hold protests against the current government. RPS Partnership has received unconfirmed reports that at least one opposition group, Tamarod Tunisia, is planning countrywide protests on the day. Further details regarding the location of these events are unavailable.

Likely gathering places of any protests are city and town centres, public squares, mosques and major government facilities. Should these occur, confrontations between opposing protest groups and the security forces remain a threat. Localised disruptions to road travel should also be anticipated.

RPS Partnership advises anyone working in Tunisia or on holiday to monitor local developments closely throughout today and be especially aware of personal security awareness in the possible protest areas. They should avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution.
