SRI LANKA rallies due to take place tomorrow in Colombo

Posted: 09/12/2013

The Front Line National Socialist Party (FLSP) has called for demonstrations to be held in Sri Lanka's commercial capital, Colombo tomorrow. The demonstration is scheduled to take place at Lipton Circus from 10:00 local time.

Further details about the event are unavailable at the moment.

The FLSP is an offshoot of the opposition Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, and has called for the demonstration to demand the release of two of its activists.

Although missing, the FLSP has claimed that the two are being illegally detained by security forces and remain in custody since their disappearance in December 2011 from Neervely, near Jaffna, in the Northern Province.

The rally is expected to conclude peacefully; however, incidents of civil unrest occur sporadically in Sri Lanka, particularly in Colombo, and have the potential to turn violent. In addition, localised travel disruptions should be anticipated in the Lipton Circus area tomorrow.

Travellers in Colombo are advised to avoid all politically motivated gatherings due to the threat of violent civil unrest. Furthermore, travel disruptions should be anticipated in and around the affected locations.
