CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC - Militia kill dozens in and around Mbres

Posted: 19/08/2014

34 people have been killed in the Central African Repulbic (CAR) in and around the settlement of Mbres, located 350km north of the Central African Republic's capital, Bangui, between 10 and 15 August.

The attacks have been attributed to members of the Islamist-dominated Seleka rebel movement, and underline the difficult security environment which exists across much of the CAR.

Although efforts aimed at finding a conciliatory solution to the crisis continue, they remain ineffective in quelling ongoing and protracted outbreaks of ethno-religious violence. Most recently, the Seleka rebel movement rejected the appointment of Mahamat Kamoun to the post of prime minister.

Despite related political developments, conflict in the CAR continues to be characterised by rampant, yet localised, clashes between highly mobile and community-level armed groups. Accordingly, any development in the political arena is unlikely to have an immediate impact on the conflict on the ground.

RPS advises against all travel to the CAR at the moment unless absolutely necessary, in which case you should consider your security carefully and be ready to use robust travel, personal and residential security measures at all times. CAR is dangerous and set to become more dangerous in coming times.
