Happy New Year from RPS

Happy New Year from RPS Partnership.

2013 has seen too much war and natural devastation hit various regions of the world. Chaos has been too frequent yet stories of hope and good do prevail.

As RPS moves forward to 2014, we look back at 2013 with the help of the BBC. Firstly we see Focus in Africa's images.  They show Africa in its different guises.  An interesting look at what has happened on the continent over this year.

Photo one shows the capture in January of Mali’s central town of Konna by Islamist militants which then prompted France’s military intervention. With 4,500 French troops on the ground, the insurgents were quickly ousted from northern towns – to the delight of some residents unhappy about their imposition of strict Islamic law, which banned smoking.

Then we look at 2013 globally through the news in pictures.

Photo 2 shows a story of hope. Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms to make landfall ever recorded, swept through the central Philippines in November. The storm left a trail of devastation and killed almost 6,000 people.

After this picture appeared on the front of the Times newspaper and appeal posters, this boy was traced. Joshua Cator, 11, lost his mother and sister in the storm, though his father survived.
