Istanbul - demonstrations planned for tomorrow Taxim Square

Posted: 30/05/2014

RPS's consultant in Istanbul has reported to us that activists behind the 2013 Gezi Park anti-government demonstrations have called for mass protests on 31 May (tomorrow) to mark the anniversary of the unrest.

Taksim solidarity, the group made up of labour unions, opposition parties and civil society groups said they would take to the streets, although it remains unclear how many will follow suit.

Taksim Square has had a permanent presence of riot police since the unrest and security forces would likely attempt to block further protest.

Our consultant is witnessing heavy police presence in the area of the square and RPS is now warning people staying in hotels near the sqaure to consider their travels plans if they are leaving tomorrow.

The general feeling is that the demonstrations will be more of a remembrance, however of course you can never be sure in Turkey. The demonstration will start from Tarlabasi Street with the intention of getting to Taxim square. It's unlikely the protest will get that far due to the huge security presence.
