Kenya - Nairobi carjacking on the increase

RPS has just received more information on the personal security situation in Nairobi. On Tuesday night, a woman was carjacked in the city centre and dumped in the Kitusuru estate.

It was reported that Ms Jean Njeri Muhoho, 66, and her friend were driving on Uhuru Highway at around 8.30pm but on reaching the University Way roundabout, she was stuck in a traffic jam.

The Nairobi County Police Commander  said that the victims were confronted by three men armed with pistols.

The attackers took control of their car and drove to Kitusuru where they were abandoned. They drove away with the car after robbing their victims of passports, Sh20,000, ATM cards and other personal effects.

In November last year, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri was attacked at the same scene at around 9.30pm while also stuck in a traffic jam.

Another Asian businessman was shot on the neck by three men riding on a motorcycle along Mombasa Road near Liberty Plaza at around 6.30pm. He was then robbed of Sh110,000 and car keys. Mr Kibue said that the victim was recuperating in hospital.

Similar attacks were also reported in Ongata Rongai, Runda, Kayole, Dagoreti and Langata.

Travellers to and drivers in Nairobi are urged to be know where these areas are and try to avoid them if they can, particularly in rush hours.

Ensure doors are locked when driving around Nairobi and limit the amound of valuables you carry with you. Be prepared for a security incident and know what to do.
