Libya - latest security update

Posted: 09/06/2014

If you are planning to travel to Libya, then the latest information which came in today is that the Supreme Court today ruled that the appointment of Ahmed Meatig as Prime Minister was unconstitutional. They also concluded that the Caretaker Prime Minister Abdullah al Thinni should remain in his position until the upcoming general elections which are scheduled to be held on 25 June 2014.

The Libyan media is also reporting today that a spokesman for Meatig has said that his client will appeal, however such an appeal would be difficult based on that the Supreme Court ruling is the final arbiter within Libya.

Benghazi: Over the later part of yesterday numerous air strikes were launched by General Hifter over Benghazi, the strikes are expected to continue indefinitely, although there have been indications that there will be increasing focus on ground offensives in Benghazi.

Tripoli:  Tripoli still remains tense in atmosphere with continual inter militia activity adding the local feel of insecurity amongst its population.

It was thought that the Supreme Court ruling which was announced earlier today over the dismissal of Maetigs election and status would send hope and ease of tensions, however it would appear that both sides will not accept the decision lightly and only add to the possibility of sporadic violence and disturbance within Tripoli.

RPS recommends that particular caution should be taken if travelling in the areas of Tripoli most prone to violence, including: the south-western districts of Hay Andalus, Hay al Akhwakh and Abu Salim, particularly along Airport Road; the eastern districts of Suq al Juma’a towards Mitiga Airbase, and further east to Tajoura; and the south-eastern districts of Ain Zara and Salahedin.

However, as recent developments have demonstrated, incidents of violence including exchanges of gunfire, bombings and kidnappings occur in all areas of the city.

Tripoli Airport: the airport remains open and is steadily receiving international traffic.
