Sierra Leone -Airlines resume flights to Freetown airport

Posted: 13/03/2014

RPS reported that airlines had suspended flights to Freetown, however yesterday British Airways and Kenya Airways resumed flights to Sierra Leone's Freetown-Lungi International Airport, which services the capital.

Although the safety concerns that led to the suspension of operations at the facility since 8 March have been rectified, it remains unconfirmed as to whether the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has increased the airport's safety rating, which was lowered on 8 March.

The international airlines suspended flights to Sierra Leone in response to an inspection by the UN's ICAO, which revealed below-standard safety equipment at the airport. The equipment has since been replaced. Although operations at the facility will normalise, the possibility of minor delays due to a backlog of flights cannot be discounted.

Travellers planning to undertake travel to or from Freetown-Lungi International Airport today are advised to contact their travel provider, airline or the airport to confirm the status of their flight(s).
