Update from Tripoli - Libya

Posted: 11/09/2014

News from SNE in Tripoli tells us that the capital is experiencing a period of relative calmness following the takeover of the Islamist-leaning Libya Dawn coalition. Iintense clashes have continued to the south and west of Tripoli.

Since the takeover and the withdrawal of Zintani forces, sources have indicated that life in the city is returning to normal. It has been reported that home invasions and arrests at checkpoints are still continuiing, as Libya Dawn militiamen have continued to target those suspected of having supported the Zintan militias during the several weeks of battles in Tripoli.

It was also reported on 09 September 2014, that representatives of the Libya Dawn coalition had travelled to southern Libya in an attempt to rally support for its activities among southern tribal leaders.

Mayors from Misrata, Zliten, Esbaia and Gharyan travelled to Sebha and Obari, but reportedly met with little success, as council leaders in Sebha and Obari refused to stand behind the Libya Dawn operation or the rival govern-ment set up in Tripoli. They stated that they supported neither side over the other and will continue to promote dialogue between the two sides.

Demonstrations are being planned for tomorrow - 12 September 2014.

It is likely that the most significant demonstrations will be held in opposition to the House of Representatives, and in favour of the self-declared rival government led by Islamist-leaning remnants of the technically-disbanded General National Congress (GNC).
