A new look at terrorism

With 17,958 people killed in terrorist attacks last year, there has never been a more crucial time to understand the impact of terrorism and to identify its underlying causes.

The 2014 Global Terrorism Index provides a comprehensive statistical analysis of the state of terrorism and identifies the social, economic and political factors that drive it.

Key facts on Terrorism

In 2013, nearly 10,000 terrorism-related incidents killed 17,958 people, an increase of 61 per cent from the previous year.

82 per cent of those killed in terrorist attacks were in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria.
In 2013, for which figures are available, terrorism was dominated by four groups: the Taliban, Boko Haram, ISIL and al Qa’ida.

More than 90% of all terrorist attacks occur in countries that have gross human rights violations.

The Global Terrorism Index, produced by Institute for Economics & Peace, ranks countries according the impact of terrorist activities as well as analysing the economic and social dimensions associated with terrorism.

The index scores 162 countries, covering 99.6% of the world’s population, and examines trends from 2000 to 2013. The indicators used include the number of terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries and property damage.
