Posted: 20/04/2015

An ongoing outbreak of meningitis has killed at least 75 people and infected 345 others across Niger since 1 January 2015.

According to reports released on 16 April, the presence of the disease has been reported in all administrative regions of the country. However, the capital, Niamey, remains worst affected and has accounted for at least half of the confirmed fatalities.

Meningococcal meningitis is an extremely dangerous infection of the fluid and tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis outbreaks often occur in Niger during the regional dry season, which extends from October to May.

The disease is marked by the sudden onset of fever, intense headaches, a stiff neck, nausea and rashes. Other symptoms may include sensitivity to light and an altered mental state.

All travellers to Niger or those already in the country should ensure that they have been vaccinated against the disease. Anyone currently in the country who is exhibiting any of the symptoms above are advised to consult a Doctor immediately.
