Tripoli airport to reopen on 17 February

Ghadames airport operations resumed yesterday

As of 13 February 2017 operations have fully resumed at the newly reopened Ghadames Airport (HLTD/LTD), located 12 mi (19 km) from the northwestern city of Ghadames. The airport officially reopened on 12 February, although an initial cargo flight did land at the facility in December 2016.

Information regarding the extent of operations expected at the facility is limited at this time; however, Libyan Airlines has announced it will operate weekly flights between Ghadames and Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport (HLLM/MJI) every Tuesday. Ghadames Airport has been closed since 2014.

In addition, Operations are also set to resume at Tripoli International Airport (HLLT/TIP) beginning on 17 February.

Details regarding the number of airlines expected to operate at the airport is unclear at this time. Tripoli International Airport also closed in 2014 after it was severely damaged during in-fighting between rival militant groups in the city. Although much of the building and some aircraft were destroyed during the fighting, the facility has since been renovated.

Despite the renewed airport operations in Tripoli and Ghadames, militant conflict in Libya remains a significant and ongoing concern. Airports, in particular, are a valuable asset and control over these facilities prompts regular inter-militia violence. Given the volatile security situation, including the potential for widespread unrest and conflict, travel to Libya is still only advised after careful risk assessments and robust security planning with stong contingency plans.
