We bring you an update from Chiron Resources, who are advising media teams on the ground in Abidjan.

As at 12:00 today on 17th May

Our contact in Abidjan tells us:

"The situation in Abidjan is calm and while there is a distinct military presence in and around the city, it appears that the tense atmosphere following the events of the last few days, is gradually subsiding."

Other local contacts have confirmed that the situation has returned to calm in the northern hotspots and there have been no incidents of gunfire or violence across the country as of 12:00 noon today

The U.S. and French embassies are still advising their staff to stay at home but schools, markets and businesses are open as of today. The normal traffic jams are in place and back to normal!

Rebel factions have removed the roadblocks and there is now free movement in the North.

It appears that the information confirming the payment of CFA 5 000 000 per rebel soldier as of yesterday afternoon are in fact based in truth. A further CFA 2 000 000 has been promised to be paid latest in August 2017.

RPS Partnership advises travellers in the Ivory Coast to keep a watchful eye on the security situation over the next few days.
