EGYPT - Attack in Alexandria over the weekend

Posted: 07/04/2015

Unidentified gunmen fired on a group of people exiting the Archangel Raphael church in the Al Agamy area of Alexandria, northern Egypt, on the evening of Sunday 5 April.

The shooting, which followed a Christian Easter Sunday service, left one police official and four civilians wounded. The gunmen fled the scene and have not yet been captured.

Egypt is experiencing an increased frequency in low-level bombings and shootings which seem to be attributed to Islamist militants and militant supporters of Islamist political parties. Most incidents target state personnel and facilities; however, incidents targeting Western and Christian interests are also reported periodically.

Any travellers in in Egypt are advised to be aware of their personal security awareness at all times when working or visiting state personnel and facilities, christian religious sites and areas that are considered overtly Western, such as hotels, tourist sights and embassies.

This means that if you see anything which is suspcious, you should report it to security forces immediately.
