RPS brings you three areas of updated information on Kenya.

Authorities deploy more soldiers to Somali border amid ongoing insurgency

Kenyan authorities deployed additional troops to the Kenyan-Somali border amid ongoing reports that local residents continue to be harassed by suspected al-Shabaab militants. Locals have reported militants have held them hostage and demanded food and water, and mounted their black flag on local government buildings. Authorities suspect that the sustained African Union offensive against the militants within Somalia has pushed them into border regions in Kenya.

Suspected al-Shabaab militants take village in northeast

Suspected al-Shabaab militants have seized the village of Kambera, northeast Kenya, near the Somali border. The insurgents took the village after Kenyan forces withdrew from the area, although reasons for the withdrawal were not given. The seizure comes as authorities sent more troops to secure the Kenyan-Somali border on 30 November.

Security exercise kills one, injures 40 at Strathmore University

A terrorist attack simulation exercise, which caused mass panic among students and staff, killed one person and injured a further 40 people at Strathmore University in Nairobi. The security exercise was organised by the university with the police, although students were not warned and mass panic ensured when gun shots were heard. Universities have heightened their security since an al-Shabaab attack on Garissa University killed 148 people in April 2015.
