SOUTH AFRICA 15 April; Anti-xenophobia march to take place in Durban

Posted: 15/04/2015

A mass anti-xenophobia demonstration is set to take place in the city of Durban, located in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, on 15 April, that is today.

The event is scheduled to begin at Curries Fountain at 10:00 local time and end at the City Hall. This latest protest action follows a spate of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in the province in recent days, which have left several people dead. Foreign nationals affected by the xenophobic violence are predominantly African migrants from countries including Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Malawi.

The rally, which has been organised by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial administration, is likely to be peaceful and conclude without incident. Nonetheless, the gathering is expected to be attended by as many as 10,000 people and could lead to travel disruptions. Travellers in the area are advised to remain flexible when travelling to accommodate for any potential travel delays caused by the march and accompanying increased security measures.
