RPS is bringing you an update from the Southern region of Turkey in the Nusaybin area to the south of Diyabakir. Our consultant on the ground is reporting that things are tense in the border areas. There are curfews in place and it is a difficult situation to navigate if you violate them. If the police consider you have violated a checkpoint, even if you have not, you are likely to be arrested.

Freelance and media journalists should assess the security in the area prior to entering as spending time in a Turkish jail is a strong possbilitiy if you get it wrong. The authorities are very very tense.

Just stopping for coffee in a small town in the Nusaybin area results in being surrounded by police within 5 minutes.

Being stopped and searched with document checks is common and being held in police custody for extended periods is quite common.

There is a lot of activity in the area of Nusaybin between Turkish troops and the PKK. The local hospital is taking in casualties and a lot of battle sounds and smoke can be heard and seen closer to the border.

The town of Diyabakir is tense and an attack is expected at any time.
