Israeli tourist destination of Eilat gets hit by rockets today

RPS Partnership can report today that it looks like at least two rockets have hit the southern-most Israeli city of Eilat, a popular tourist destination on the Red Sea. Tens of thousands of tourists visit every year to go on holiday.

The rockets landed in an open area and caused no injuries or deaths. Eilat’s airport has now been closed and security tightened.

The Mujahedeen Shura Council is an armed al-Qa'ida-linked  group that is active in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and in the Gaza Strip. The group describes violence against Jews as a religious obligation that brings its perpetrators closer to God.

Eilat, a popular tourist destination on the Red Sea, has previously been hit by rockets fired by Islamic militants in neighbouring Egypt and Jordan.

Most of the rockets were fired from Sinai, which has become increasingly lawless since the revolution, which toppled former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Islamic militant groups have grown in strength there and have used it as a base from which to target Israel across the lengthy shared border.  RPS Partnership advises travellers to seek advice prior to travel to this area.

Security in the Egyptian desert region has deteriorated since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak two years ago. Jordanian security is much tighter, hence the higher volume of incoming rockets from Egyptian territory.
