More clashes in South Dafur, Sudan

Posted: 02/06/2013

Violence has erupted again in South Sudan in the Katayla area of South Dafur. At least 14 people have been killed and a further 22 injured in renewed communal clashes.

RPS Partnership can report that tensions remain elevated in the area since the violence increased again in early February 2013.  The latest clashes come amid allegations of state authorities favouring the Beni Halba tribes; Gimr members have accused paramilitary police forces stationed near Katayla of providing Beni Halba tribesmen with arms and other supplies.

Other efforts to restart the negotiation process have been unsuccessful and an immediate resolution to the dispute is thought to be unlikely.

The likelihood of further violence within the region remains high and RPS Partnership advises against all travel to the Dafur region, due to heightened threats of conflict, kidnapping and banditry.

If you intend to travel there, please contact RPS Partnership for advice on how to do this safely and we also advise you to register your presence in the country with your diplomatic representation.
