Nairobi - gang posing as police officers in Westlands

Posted: 15/05/2014

RPS has seen news reports stating that there is a gang operating in the Westlands area of Nairobi posing as police officers. Is this the same gang that has been attacking people over the last month?

On May 12 at around 10am, Paul Karago withdrew USD 2500 from the KCB at Sarit Centre. As he was going to his car, he was confronted by four men.

One of them identified himself as a police officer and informed him that he was under arrest for ‘smoking at an undesignated area.’ They handcuffed and bundled him into their car. They then robbed him of the cash, golden rings, wrist watch and 200 Ethiopian Birr. They later dumped him at Lower Kabete.

A fortnight ago, Mr Nawaz Abdiraham also withdrew Sh350,000 from a bank in Westlands. He was attacked by a gang of four men driving in a white Toyota DX registration number KAY 950S. This gang robbed him of the cash before driving away towards Kangemi.

In the last one month, at least seven such cases have been reported in the area.

RPS advises anyone living, working or travelling in this area to avoid drawing money from ATMs in the Westlands area of Nairobi and to go elsewhere to draw money out.
