Local media sources reported that two explosions occurred on a metro train at the Sennaya Ploshchad station in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Social media reports indicated that the explosions caused multiple casualties, with the state media citing a police source saying that at least 10 people were killed.

Metro stations in proximity to the area have reportedly been shut by authorities.

Although authorities have not made a statement regarding the cause of the explosion, Islamist militants originating from the North Caucasus have targeted the transportation network in Russian cities several times in recent years, with bombings in Moscow in 2010 killing 40 people and bombings in Volvograd in 2013 killing 32 people.

If the authorities confirm the incident as a terrorist attack, severe security measures in large cities and a crackdown on suspected militants in the North Caucasus are likely in the coming weeks.
